This was not what I pictured in my head

Tonight I gave Flora a haircut. I’ve trimmed her bangs before so I figured I could do a bit of cleanup on her whole head.

Big mistake. Look what I did to this poor child!

Assymetrical pixie cut was not what I had planned

I love short bangs, and wear them that way myself (it allows for longer times between haircuts), but this is a little ridiculous. I did the bangs first and if I hadn’t cut them so short, I probably wouldn’t have went so short on the sides and back. When the back and sides were long, it looked like she had a huge mullet, and not a retro-cool one. So the mullet had to go. My girl does not need to live the business-up-front, party-in-the-back lifestyle yet. (Not until she’s at least three, we figure.)

Part of me feels horrible about this. How could I make my kid look so goofy, and so close to Easter when she’ll be dressed to the nines? Part of me figures “It’s just hair. It’ll grow back, and Flora doesn’t really seem bothered by it.” Little girls with short hair are really cute, and it’ll certainly look neater than the non-style she was rocking pre-haircut:

(Sorry about the runny nose. Flora's had a cold all week and this picture was taking shortly after a non-hair-related crying jag.)

We haven’t even really seen her new hair dry yet. After the haircut, she had a bath and was put to bed. What it looks like tomorrow morning will be the test.

However, my lesson has been learned. Don’t cut your kid’s hair unless you know what you’re doing.

Postscript: I had every intention of taking Flora to a professional to get her hair done. I even went to a no-appointment place on Friday night with her. However, no dinner plus an an hour-plus wait plus an unexpected dirty diaper and no spares equals a cranky kid who had to bail with only one other person in front of her. I wasn’t risking complete meltdown in a chair with a strange person wielding scissors at her head in that state. It’s been bothering me all weekend, and tonight I just decided to go for it and do it myself. Never again. (Well, maybe bangs, but that’s *it*.)
