QotD: Happy Birthday To Me

Birthday fun

I’ve been singing this song all week, even though my name isn’t Lisa.

However, it is my birthday today. I’ve been singing the song in preparation for it and now it’s finally here.

I turned 29 today for those of you that are wondering. Not a significant milestone since it’s not divisible by five, but sort of a big birthday since 30 is right around the corner now.

I’ve had a really great day. I did spend the bulk of my day at work, but since it was a Friday before a long weekend, I was able to leave early since the office was a bit of a ghost town by that point. I was supposed to be super busy doing all sorts of last minute stuff, but things ended up being done really quickly or put off till next week – rock! I took advantage of the extra time and took the subway up to meet Sean at one of our favourite restaurants for my birthday dinner. We both came home very satisfied, and we’ve been chilling out at home ever since.

I got lots of great, thoughtful presents from my family and friends (thank you all!). Sean really spoiled me this year. He bought me a new camera (which I have been drooling over for awhile now), the four Harry Potter books I didn’t have and tonight’s dinner. He was so excited to give me the camera, he gave it to me on Monday night “so I’d know how to use it by the time my birthday came”. My parents sent me money which I intend to spend on clothes tomorrow. My aunt and uncle also sent me money, which I spent on a memory card for the camera. Sean’s mom gave me a beautiful set of earrings which I have been wearing for awhile now since she gave them to me early. My friend Carrie gave me movie gift certificates which I will save for something special I want to see.

I’ve also gotten lots of really nice birthday phonecalls, messages on Facebook and in person. Those kind messages mean a lot to me and I am so thankful to have such thoughtful friends and family. I hope I can be such a good friend back to all of you!

Love and hugs to all!

Cell phones are for calling people? Who does that anymore?

My cell phone is becoming more and more useful. Not so much for calling people (although it’s capable of that too), but for sending text messages to get information and to update various websites.

I just learned about Google SMS today. Along with finding out restaurants and movie times, this will help with settling bets and questions while out and about. I also just discovered that Facebook and Virgin Mobile Canada now play nicely together so I can send text messages there too. Probably not incredibly useful without cameras and stuff, but could be fun. I’ve been using my cell phone to occasionally update my Twitter page for a while now.

I’ll continue to do most of my various updates from the web (cuz that’s free) versus paying to send a text, but it’s fun to text stuff as I think of it versus waiting until I am in front of a computer. I don’t have web browsing capability on my phone (it seems so expensive for what you get), but all this text messaging should be plenty for now.

RSI should stand for "real stupid injury" because it is self-inflicted

I went for a massage last night for the first time since December of last year. My wrist, elbow and shoulder have been bothering me lately, and I wanted to make sure all my recent heavy computer use wasn’t giving me RSI’s. (Things have been crazy at work lately, and my recent discovery of Facebook hasn’t helped.) I went to a clinic I had never been to before, and really liked the RMT they assigned for my appointment. She explained things she was doing and asked lots of questions. She made a lot of observations about my body in relation to the soreness I’ve been feeling.

Apparently most of the pain is originating from my neck, which comes from poor posture at the computer (big surprise there). I knew I was going to be sore today, but I cannot believe how sore my neck and shoulders were today. It even went up to my head and gave me a nasty headache for most of the afternoon. She recommended that I come back in two weeks and once all the major kinks and pains work themselves out, I can then come monthly for maintenance. I’m not averse to getting monthly massages (in fact, I quite like the idea), but I hope my insurance doesn’t run out too soon. I’d like to get these treatments covered for as long as I can.

Consider this a friendly reminder to take frequent short breaks away from the computer. Even if you are just going to the bathroom or having a smoke/fresh-air break. Getting up and walking around and changing your position really does make a difference.
