Johnny Cash’s video for “Hurt” (a cover of the Nine Inch Nails song) makes me cry. It seems silly to talk so strongly about the video for the song versus the actual song itself, but the video is a perfect accompaniment and makes the song even better.

My grandma liked Johnny Cash. If she was alive, I would play this for her and ask her what she thought of it. If she liked it, it would give me hope for modern rock music. Maybe some of it does have some staying power. Maybe we will still enjoy the songs we listened to in our youth rather than recoil in horror – “I used to listen to that?”

Besides, the fact that my grandma could have possibly liked a song written by Trent Reznor (albeit, with someone more familiar singing it) makes me smile.
