QotD: It Was Kismet

How did you meet your current, or most recent, significant other?

Sean and I met in high school when we had a class together. We were in separate grades (he’s a year older than I am), so we didn’t really run with the same crowds, although we did have some mutual friends.

I sat in front of him and apparently he developed a crush on me. He and I and another friend in the class were grouped up to do class-related stuff that involved leaving class a lot (legitimately). We got to know each other better and eventually Sean got the guts up to ask me if I’d like to go to lunch with him. Unfortunately, I had to say no because I had band practice at lunch that day, but I told him that I really wasn’t trying to refuse him, but that the day he suggested didn’t work for me. Finally we picked a day and went to McDonalds for lunch. Romantic I know, but it was a school day and we had limited time together. While we drove there, he played me a CD by a band he knew I liked (Splendor Solis by the Tea Party). I noticed and thought that was pretty thoughtful (whatta smooth guy!)

Once we were at the restaurant, I ordered first, and insisted I pay for myself (cuz I wasn’t owing no one nothin’!). I didn’t want him to think I was a pig, so instead of ordering the Big Mac meal like I usually did at the time, I ordered an apple pie and a Coke for lunch. I must have flustered him, cuz he ended up doing the same thing! As we ate, we chatted, and I couldn’t stop staring at his hands cuz they were really freckly, which I thought was unusual for someone with dark hair. I wondered if his hands were soft, but I didn’t touch them cuz I was shy. Towards the end of the meal, Sean asked me if I wanted to go and see a Belleville Bulls game with him cuz he had season tickets. While I wanted to go out with him again, I told him no because I wasn’t a big hockey fan, and I would be a waste of a ticket. I felt bad cuz I kept putting him off. It wasn’t intentional – I liked him – but it just kept happening that way.

Eventually we had a second date (we went to see The Birdcage), and really, we’ve been together ever since. We still eat apple pies from McDonalds sometimes, but now I always have the Big Mac first. I’ve also been to a few hockey games with him, but I still maintain that I am a waste of a ticket, so I am now the last resort which is fine with me. After almost eleven years of being together, we can be a little more frank with each other, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
