Vox Hunt: Is For The Birds

Show us some birds.

I think ducks are hilarious. They are cute, yet funny looking and make amusing noises. If you make a quacking noise that sounds even close to duck-like, I will giggle like a fool.

For more pictures of duck bottoms, you can visit Saska and Little Odd Me. We seem to have a thing for them.

It's done!

The bathroom is done! I’m thrilled with how it turned out, although I know I’ll be agonizing over every mistake and doing small touch-ups for at least a week. But it’s done. Everything is put back and cleaned up and bathing can be done without stepping in a paint can.

The funny part is that my mom phoned me this morning and told me that she had a day off on Tuesday, and did I want her to come up and paint it for me? I shocked her when I told her that I was almost finished the job cuz she knew I dreaded doing it. My mom is like that, and I don’t like taking advantage of it too much cuz it’s easy to grow dependent on someone else doing all the work.

Well, I promised pictures, so here they are:

This was the colour I had in the bathroom before I painted. I loved this colour – it was so cheerful. However, I did a horrible paint job when I put this on, so I don’t really miss it now. Sean thought it looked like Kraft Dinner, but I thought it was too orange for that – maybe Extra Creamy no-name macaroni and cheese, but not regular KD.

This is it! It’s really hard to take a decent picture in my bathroom cuz it’s so small (I’m sitting on the floor beside the toilet to capture this shot). Since the flash is bouncing off the glass shelf, it’s throwing things off a bit. The green is not quite that blue-tinged. It’s very spring-y to me, and kinda like the blades of grass on my Vox banner if that helps. The hooks are a new thing (I actually scraped some paint off while putting this up, so that’s one of my touchups – aargh!)

These are my new sink, bathmat and shower curtain. Again, the bathroom is so small, it’s hard to capture everything individually so here’s a bit of everything all at once. The shower curtain does have some green in it, so it does match. I like the bright colours though – it’s feels so cheerful, and the white fixtures and trim really set them off.

I know I’ve posted pictures of these bars of soap before, but I’m posting them again cuz they look so nice against the green. I also wanted to prove that I do use my own soaps – they aren’t just decoration. (Wait a minute – this picture doesn’t really prove that at all, since they are sitting here as decorations. But I don’t think a picture of a used bar of soap is necessary.)

I’m really proud of myself. I did a lot of work to get things the way I wanted them. Oh, and Sean did help, but he did stuff like holding or screwing in shelves when I had trouble with them, and checking the walls for orange spots (at those points, all I could see was spots so I needed the extra eye). He also did the final hardware store run this morning. Most importantly, he made sure that I got most of the paint off of me – I always get covered in it.

I’m so glad it’s done. Even if there are still touchups to do.

Why did I decide to do this again?

I’ve finally started getting down to business. I’ve spot-primed the spackled spots (spackled spots, what a funny phrase!) and I’m waiting for the one on the ceiling to dry so I can paint the ceiling. I’m hoping to finish the ceiling tonight so I can paint the walls tomorrow. Then I can do the door and trim either later on Saturday or on Sunday. That allows me to have the room back together on Sunday night so we can shower for work on Monday.

I really don’t want to be paint the ceiling. I don’t really want to paint the trim either. I hadn’t planned to do either until my mother said “you really do have to do those if you want to do a good job”. I know my mom is right, but that’s more work than I initially planned for. I don’t know why it’s bugging me so much – the ceiling and trim are the two smallest parts of this job. They’re just so finicky to do.

I bought the last major things to complete the bathroom’s look and feel (I just can’t say “decor”). Got the shower curtain I planned on, the towel hooks I wanted (apparently, I am on trend with this one), and a new bath mat now that the old one won’t match. I planned ahead and bought it in white so it will match everything. Wonder how long it will take before it is a grody kind of gray.

Well, I just checked and the primer on the ceiling is pretty much dry, so I guess I better stop procrastinating now. Warm thoughts would be appreciated.

A gift from my two dads…

When Sean and I went to my parent’s place last weekend to hook up their new Internet connection, I walked into their garage to see this lovely shelf. My sister has a similar one in her kitchen that I have admired for some time, so my parents decided that they should make one for me. So my stepdad, being the handy guy that he is made it based on the measurements that he took from her shelf. It was supposed to be a Christmas present, but they ran out of time. I’d say getting it done by the end of the year was pretty darn impressive.

As my stepdad was telling me about how he put the shelf together, he mentioned that he had used tools that used to belong to my dad that my mom had kept after he died. Upon hearing this, I blurted out, “So it’s a present from *both* my dads! That makes it *extra* special!”

He said “Yes, and your father’s combination square is a piece of shit, but I couldn’t find mine. I did use your dad’s white mallet though, and it worked fine.” That made me laugh.

We’re a sentimental pair, my stepdad and I.

I’m thrilled with this shelf, and I stained it yesterday. I loaded it up with our stuff today (the dog treats are up high so Leia doesn’t go sneaking). Since the shelf covers up where our clock used to be, I nailed it to the front of the shelf. That covers up the non-existent hole in the top that would have made the shelf more like a birdhouse.

It’s funny what stuff sticks around people’s homes. Shitty tools never seem to find a place to die, but can anyone ever find stuff like scotch tape and a pen that works consistently without tearing apart the house?
