QotD: I Rock The Mic

What song makes you rock the karaoke mic?
Submitted by Ann.

I’ve only done karaoke a couple of times so I can tell you all the songs I’ve actually sang:

  • No Rain by Blind Melon
  • Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen
  • These Boots are Made for Walking by Nancy Sinatra (there’s video of this, but I’m not sure how to edit it to get it online so too bad.)
  • I Want to Break Free by Queen

I love singing Queen songs cuz they force me to channel my inner rock star. I’d love to sing some Tom Petty too.

I’m also brave enough to get up and sing stone cold sober, even though I am not the best singer. I do tend to start dancing along a bit, and not being an engineered pop star, I end up looking dumb, but hopefully sounding okay.

Sean and I have been trying to decide if we should buy a karaoke machine for the house or not. He found a bunch of karaoke music that we thought would be a hit at any party we had, cuz we picked fewer ballads and pop hits and more songs to rock out to. It’s fun to see someone give ‘er on a ballad, but it’s even more fun to see ’em rock out like they’re singing in the shower or car.

I’d love to know how a graphologist would interpret my handwriting.

QotD: What I Love About Vox

In honor of Vox’s launch tomorrow, what’s your favorite feature or aspect of Vox?

I love that Vox is easy to work with. Everything is simple and elegant. While I’d love to be able to customize my layout, it isn’t really necessary, as there are so many interesting templates to choose from.

I also like being able to log in and see the QOTD and the Vox Hunt and know that if I didn’t have anything to post, these could be an inspiration that leads to a post I would not have made on my own.

These are bars of soap that I’ve made. They are normally wrapped to maintain their scent, but I unwrapped them for the picture so you could see them in their full beauty.

These soaps are made using the melt and pour technique. Unscented, uncoloured soap base is melted into liquid at low heat. Once it is liquid, scents and colours of your choice can be added. Once the ingredients are mixed together, the liquid is then poured into molds to cool. The soap is ready to use in an hour or two.

These soaps are meant to be used so Sean and I don’t buy a lot of regular bars of soap anymore. I like being able to control the amount of fragrance a bar of soap has.

Melt and pour soap can also be as simple or as fancy as you want. These soaps are super simple to do, but with the right techniques, you can make some really beautiful soaps with multiple colours and layers.

I also make bath bombs and lotions, but I don’t have any around to photograph. Bath bombs are surprisingly easy to make. The lotion is easy too, but that is because I use a lotion base, rather than make it 100% from scratch, which is more finicky.

I love melt and pour soapmaking as a hobby. The soap doesn’t take a lot of time to create, and the product is to be used and not just looked at. Cleanup is also usually pretty easy cuz the pot is covered with soap – a little water and some light scrubbing and everything is clean again!

Vox Hunt: It Makes Me Nostalgic

Show us something that makes you nostalgic.

This is a picture of my family that was taken when I was four or five years old, so it was 1982 or 1983 (remind me to ask my mom sometime – isn’t that awful that I’m not sure!). My dad, Marty is holding my sister Kyla, and I’m sitting next to my mom, Faye. I even had that huge toothy grin then.

This picture makes me nostalgic cuz it feels like a completely different life. My father died 15 years ago, and while I was old enough to remember him for the rest of my life, the details get fuzzy sometimes, and that makes me sad.

My mom told me once that I would have gotten along with my father really well if he had known me as an adult. I was just heading into TeenageGirlLand when he died (just before I turned 13), so I was probably becoming pretty weird to him. I just wish I could have found out.

This is a picture taken on my wedding day. Kyla was my matron of honour, and my mom Faye and my stepdad Doug hosted the reception at their home.

I’ve only been married since June 2004, so this picture doesn’t make me nostalgic yet, but it does show the passage of time, and how things can change so quickly.

I love my stepdad very much, but sometimes I just wish my father had been there too.
