QotD: Save It For A Rainy Day

What’s the best way to spend a rainy day?
Submitted by Vee.

As with almost everything in life, it depends. I love curling up with a good book, but if it’s been raining all day, I’m going to finish that book and need something else to do.

Mindless housework can be good as finishing it leads to a sense of accomplishment and earning the right to curl up with with another book. (I was also one of those children who was told to eat the food they didn’t like first so you could save your favourite for the end.)

The right movie can also be extra nice on a rainy day, especially when you have someone nice to share it with, and a blanket to cuddle under.

If it’s raining on a cold day, doing laundry in the dryer can make your house feel homey, and a little warmer. The thump and whir of the clothes can be a very soothing counterpoint to the rain.

If there are many people around during this rainy day, board games can be oodles of fun.

If none of these things are appealing, there is always the good ol’ standby – taking a nap!

I am on vacation for the next two weeks, which means that I don’t have to go back to work until after Labour Day. I love it when my vacation ends in a long weekend so I can take that much more time off. Sean and I are both off next week then I am off by myself the week after. We don’t have any earth-shaking plans – just visiting the inlaws ‘n’ outlaws (we’re not sure who’s who) next weekend, and going to see the Foo Fighters on Wednesday. We are also hoping to paint the deck (Sean’s job) and the basement stairs (my job). Fun times for all. Hopefully we’ll fit some other stuff in, but just relaxing at home will be good too – it’s definitely needed.

I’m tired of this domain name. After over five years of owning geeKsuperstar.org, I don’t feel that I connect with it anymore. I feel like I have to hide it from most people – family and coworkers in particular. I’ve never made a big deal about the site, but I’ve never liked explaining the meaning of “geeKsuperstar” to people. It means something to me, I just don’t want to explain it.

As everyone and the dog gets more interesting in blogs, either opening one themselves or reading others, I don’t like publicizing mine. A way to get around this could be to write under a pseudonym, but I’ve always felt for me, that that would be dishonest. I’ve also always liked the idea of someone Googling my name, finding my site and dropping me an email. There are a lot of people from my past I would love to say hello to, but I have no way of knowing where they are, or who they are now. So I put myself out there, rather than contact other people.

I love having a personal website. However, it’s been really neglected for close to three years – really since I started working at my current job. My job is much more job-like now, and I don’t have time to update here multiple times a day like I used to. Even once a day is hard cuz I don’t always like turning on the computer once I get home – I’ve sat at a computer all day at work, why would I want to do that all night at home too, even if it is for a project that is all mine?

I want to buy a new domain. I even know what domain name I want. Problem, is, I can’t seem to find the cash to purchase it among all the other things that one needs to purchase. I’m also afraid that if I purchase it, I still won’t update and that it won’t be worth my money.

I’ve said to myself that I would buy the name in the new year, no matter what my credit card statement looks like. I really like having an outlet that’s my own, and I want to continue it.

Now that I’ve put this in writing, I hope that I will commit to it. I should probably do the truly geeky thing and put a reminder in my email or something “January 1st, 2006 – buy new domain – start new internet life!” Or something like that.

Edited to add: I had forgotten that I had posted an entry with similar content that never got published. At least my thought pattern is consistent.

Photos of my latest soap:

This is the first time I’ve made soap in a long time. I set up a “soaping centre” in my office where I could make soap (or any other crafty thing) and tonight was the first time I used it (I was waiting for some pyrex pots I bought off of Ebay to come in so I wouldn’t be trucking the kitchen pots up and downstairs all the time). I’m really happy with the way the space, and the soap, turned out.

One of the best things Sean and I have done in our house is separate our offices. Now we both have a space in the house that is solely our own. I love working in my office much more than I did when Sean and I had a shared office, and I think I’m becoming more productive on the hobby side of things again, with the soap, and the increased entries on the site, so that is a great bonus.

Here are pictures of the start of this year’s garden chez melissa and Sean.

I was planting plants for four hours this afternoon. Thank goodness the weather held up and it didn’t rain. I know it’s a little early to be gardening in Toronto, but I figure if I can buy the plants, I may as well try it. Besides, last year, I started too late and that resulted in fewer tomatoes. Now that my tomatoes are planted and the plants are just babies, there is reason to be optimistic that I will grow really successful tomatoes this year.

This is important to me because I love tomatoes. They are one of my all time favourite foods. They are perfect in their versatility and all around tastiness. My stepdad gave me a page from his “You might be a redneck if…” calendar that says “You might be a redneck if…Homegrown tomatoes make your list of the most important things in life.” So I guess my tomato-growing obsession makes me a redneck, but I am okay with that.
